Akatsuki in Naruto Series

Akatsuki was a group of shinobi who were not part of the regular hidden village system. They changed and had different leaders over time. People saw them as troublemakers or lawbreakers, but their goal was to improve the world in their own way. Each Akatsuki group had many secret bases around the world, which were difficult to reach because they were either far away or well protected.

History

Yahiko's Akatsuki

The initial idea for Akatsuki was created by Black Zetsu, who tricked Madara Uchiha into thinking it was his own plan. Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan founded Akatsuki during the Third Shinobi World War to bring peace to their home country of Amegakure, which suffered from the conflicts of the five major shinobi nations. Tobi, pretending to be Madara Uchiha, approached them and offered to teach Nagato to control his Rinnegan. However, Yahiko distrusted Tobi and refused the offer. Akatsuki gained popularity as more Amegakure ninja joined their cause. Hanzō, the leader of Amegakure, saw them as a threat and set up a meeting where Yahiko was forced to sacrifice himself to save Konan. Nagato, enraged by Yahiko's death, used the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to defeat their attackers. In the anime, the other members of Akatsuki tried to help but were killed by Tobi and Zetsu.

Nagato's Akatsuki

Yahiko, before his death, entrusted Nagato with the mission of achieving peace. Nagato, devastated by Yahiko's loss, believed that the world would never willingly choose peace. He thought that only through widespread destruction and death would people realize the horrors of war and reject conflict. Nagato took on the name "Pain" and created the Six Paths of Pain, incorporating Yahiko's corpse to symbolically continue leading Akatsuki. Nagato, under the disguise of Madara Uchiha, sought support from Obito and accepted his offer. Akatsuki recruited S-rank missing-nin after the Third Shinobi World War, promising protection and using their services to gather money. Their plan was to dominate the shinobi market, gradually eliminate other major shinobi forces, and conquer all the countries of the world. Akatsuki gained popularity and success, working on missions that the hidden villages themselves refused to undertake during times of peace. They aimed to capture the tailed beasts to unleash their power and intimidate the world into peace. Despite internal conflicts and opposition from the hidden villages, Akatsuki continued its quest to capture the tailed beasts. Eventually, the remaining members faced challenges, and Nagato, after encountering Naruto, realized the mistakes he had made. He sacrificed his life to revive those he had killed, urging Naruto to pursue a peaceful future. With Yahiko and Nagato gone, Konan chose to leave Akatsuki.

Tobi's Akatsuki

Tobi joined Akatsuki with the intention of using Nagato's power to fulfill the Eye of the Moon Plan. Obito, disguised as Madara Uchiha, manipulated Nagato and worked behind the scenes to capture all the tailed beasts. The plan involved casting the Infinite Tsukuyomi on the world, trapping everyone in a dream and ending all conflicts. Obito took a more active role in Akatsuki's activities after Itachi's death and formed alliances with Kisame and Sasuke. Despite setbacks and opposition, Obito continued to pursue his goals. Eventually, Obito's plans were thwarted by Naruto and his allies, and he underwent a change of heart. He attempted to redeem himself but was manipulated by Black Zetsu, leading to the revival of Madara Uchiha and the continuation of his plans. However, in the end, Naruto, Sasuke, and their allies defeated Madara and put an end to the Infinite Tsukuyomi.

Rings

Each member of Akatsuki, under Nagato's leadership, is given a unique ring to wear on a specific finger. The rings appear to have a connection to the sealing of the tailed beasts and indicate where the members should stand on the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. The rings hold significance and are not easily replaceable. When Orochimaru leaves the group, he takes his ring with him and is never officially replaced. Deidara shows more interest in recovering his lost ring than his lost arm. The rings have specific colors and kanji representing different meanings. While the exact significance of the rings is not explained, they hold importance within Akatsuki.

Teams

Under Nagato's leadership, Akatsuki members are grouped into teams of two based on similarities or strategic advantages. However, despite being partners, most members do not like each other, and they even stay in separate rooms when they stay at hotels. There is often hostility between members, even those who are not partners, but since they rarely meet, it is not a significant issue. These teams travel the world to pursue Akatsuki's objectives and come together only when summoned by Nagato, usually for the purpose of sealing a tailed beast.

Nagato & Konan

Nagato and Konan, childhood friends and members of the original Akatsuki, have a strong bond and are the only members who consistently get along. Nagato, being the leader, holds authority over Konan, and she follows his instructions even if she disagrees. In Amegakure, Konan serves as a messenger, conveying Nagato's decisions to the villagers. Nagato's true identity is kept secret from the rest of the organization, and the Deva Path is used as his representative.

Black Zetsu & White Zetsu

Black Zetsu and White Zetsu are allies of Tobi and have been part of Akatsuki for a long time. Although they have separate identities, they usually merge together to form a single member called Zetsu. They have specific tasks such as spying, getting rid of evidence, and acquiring resources. While they sometimes argue, it doesn't affect their duties. Zetsu is often the only Akatsuki member that others meet face-to-face. One of their main responsibilities is assisting in transporting the jinchūriki to Akatsuki hideouts for the extraction of the Tailed Beast.

Orochimaru & Sasori

Orochimaru and Sasori were part of an early Akatsuki team. While not much information is available about their specific actions, they were known to be a successful duo. They had a good working relationship, to the extent that Orochimaru was familiar with Sasori's true appearance beneath his usual Hiruko disguise. However, their relationship soured over time, leading both of them to desire different partners. Sasori harbored resentment towards Orochimaru after his defection from Akatsuki and became personally invested in monitoring his activities.

Jūzō & Itachi

Jūzō and Itachi formed a highly effective partnership in Akatsuki and carried out several missions together involving assassination and sabotage. They had a unique system of formations to synchronize their attacks. Formation A allowed each shinobi to individually use their preferred abilities, Formation B involved Itachi initiating the attack with genjutsu or shurikenjutsu while Jūzō finished off the incapacitated enemies with his sword. Jūzō specifically requested Formation C, which involved Itachi killing him if he were captured by Kirigakure, but Itachi refused. Unfortunately, Jūzō was killed by the Fourth Mizukage during an assassination attempt, and Itachi honored his fallen comrade by placing the remains of Kubikiribōchō, Jūzō's sword, in his hands after severely injuring Yagura.

Itachi & Kisame

Kisame believed that his partnership with Itachi was fitting because both of them had a reputation for killing their own people. Despite having different personalities, Itachi and Kisame had a good relationship. Kisame had a tendency towards violence, but he always followed Itachi's orders, even if it meant he couldn't satisfy his desire to kill. Kisame feels sorrowful when Itachi dies, and when Itachi is later revived, he shows regret upon learning of Kisame's death.

Sasori & Deidara

Deidara is brought into Akatsuki to replace Orochimaru as Sasori's partner, with Itachi's assistance. Both Deidara and Sasori consider themselves artists, but they have conflicting views on the nature of art: Sasori sees it as everlasting, like a puppet, while Deidara sees it as temporary, like an explosion. Deidara respects Sasori's expertise and defers to him, but he feels deeply saddened by Sasori's eventual death.

Kakuzu & Hidan

Kakuzu, known for killing his previous partners in fits of anger, is now paired with Hidan, an immortal who cannot be killed. Unlike other teams that occasionally cooperate, Hidan and Kakuzu actively despise each other: Hidan sees Kakuzu's greed for money as sacrilegious, while Kakuzu is determined to kill Hidan because his rituals waste precious time. Despite their animosity, they are highly effective as a team and are referred to as the "Immortal Combo" or the "Zombie Combo." If Hidan is injured, Kakuzu can stitch him back together, and Kakuzu can launch attacks without worrying about Hidan's survival. Shikamaru Nara believes they are nearly unstoppable as long as they remain together.

Deidara & Tobi

When Sasori is replaced by Tobi as Deidara's partner in Akatsuki, Deidara is regularly annoyed by Tobi's disrespectful behavior and apparent ignorance. Deidara tries to kill Tobi multiple times out of frustration but fails to succeed. Unaware of Tobi's true identity, Deidara sees him as a disciple and teaches him about the ways of the world and how to be successful in Akatsuki. Towards the end of his life, Deidara shows a certain fondness for Tobi, instructing him to keep a safe distance before sacrificing himself with C0 and apologizing for what he believes will be Tobi's imminent death.
